Real World Math: Unexpected Events
Managing My Allowance
Help students see the relevance of math skills. Each player
begins with a checking account balance of $100. In
turn, each player sees how many spaces to move and
picks up an “unexpected event” card. According to the
card’s instructions, the player either adds or subtracts
an amount from his or her account (e.g. receiving a
birthday gift or taking the cat to the vet). The first
player to reach the end receives a bonus amount.
Players then add up how much money they have in
their accounts; the one with the most money wins. The
game board comes with 50 unexpected events cards,
20 sheets of a check register (reproducible), and six game
pieces. 2–6 players. Grades 2 and up.
Managing My Allowance offers valuable first
experiences in using money. Players develop an overall
understanding of how to use coins and bills to pay for
purchases, compute change, collect earnings, handle
allowances and gifts, and make deposits into college
savings accounts. For 2-4 players, grades 3+.
